A screen printed commemorative cloth in honor of Ms. Bethel Deas, my great granny. Sharing the same birthday, Mrs. Deas was born on June 30, 1917 and worked as a successful housekeeper through much of her adult life.
The phrase "like one of the family" reveals a double-edged expectation in authority-driven spaces: offering comfort on one side, while implying that belonging is conditional on the services you provide. Much of the world relies on the instinctive & helping hands of black women to uphold households and build communities that were not even their own.

If you look closely, you'll see a few circular spots of un-dyed silk. This is my experimentation with coins–really any change I had on me at the time. Similar to Arashi dyeing on the silk swatch down this page, the resist aspect of this dyeing technique can really provide copious amounts of print and textural opportunity!
